Brief History of UASU-TUM

UASU-TUM — University Academic Staff Union, Technical University of Mombasa Chapter

1. UASU-TUM Chapter Background

UASU-TUM Chapter is a branch of a registered trade union representing teaching staff working for the Technical University of Mombasa.

The chapter enjoys legal status, having been registered on 14 September 2010 under the Labour Relations Act as UASU-MPUC branch.

The chapter started with 94 members, and the first union dues were deducted in October 2010. It was among the first smaller chapters to join the UASU fraternity at the time.

2. The Early UASU Fraternity

At the time of its formation, the UASU fraternity comprised seven universities. The TUM chapter was among the smaller chapters joining this growing national academic staff movement.

3. Early Institutional Support

Following consultations between chapter officials and the then Principal, MPUC implemented the 2008–2010 CBA in full. The administration also supported the chapter by providing transport and per diem for officials attending national meetings.

The national UASU office further strengthened the chapter by inviting its leaders to participate in negotiations held between 18 November and 21 December 2009 at Merica Hotel, Nakuru. These engagements equipped chapter officials with valuable negotiation skills.

Why the Chapter Was Formed
The formation of the chapter was driven by the understanding that academic staff are intellectual workers who must collectively negotiate their terms of service, including workload, allowances and benefits.

4. Formation of the Chapter

The UASU-MPUC Chapter was officially launched on 30 October 2009 with strong support from the then Principal, Prof. Josephat Mwatela.

He facilitated collaboration with the UASU-JKUAT Chapter, sending Mr. Mathew Winja to help establish the chapter.

After mobilizing volunteers across departments, ten interim officials were selected during a meeting at Holiday Inn Stadium.
