Our Leadership Vision

The strength of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) lies in its ability to defend the rights, welfare and professional dignity of academic staff while promoting a progressive university environment.

Our leadership vision for the 2026–2031 term is anchored on principled representation, transparent engagement and strategic collaboration to ensure that the interests of members remain at the centre of Union action.

1. Resolving Outstanding Staff Welfare and Governance Issues

Members' welfare remains our priority. We commit to structured and results-oriented engagement with University Management and Council, accountability in implementing agreed actions, and regular feedback to members.

We will use lawful Union mechanisms, including negotiations, legal action and industrial engagement, to address unresolved and emerging issues.

Our Welfare Commitment
We will continue to pursue practical, lawful and evidence-based solutions to outstanding issues affecting the welfare, rights and working conditions of academic staff.

  • Incomplete implementation of the 2017–2021 CBA.
  • Delayed remittance of statutory and third-party deductions.
  • Unpaid commuter/car allowances for August–September 2020.
  • Delayed gratuity payments.
  • Punitive training levy deductions from full-load members.
  • Delayed salaries.
  • Inequitable promotion and placement processes.
  • Contract renewals and regularization with salary gaps.
  • Delayed settlement of part-time dues.

2. Effective Implementation of the National CBA and HR Policies

Beyond resolving past issues, we will champion the full and faithful implementation of the harmonized National Collective Bargaining Agreement and progressive human resource policies.

  • Monitor compliance with CBA timelines.
  • Enforce fair career progression frameworks.
  • Advocate for transparent human resource processes.
  • Ensure parity and equity for all academic staff.

Implementation and Accountability
Through dedicated taskforces and joint consultative forums, we will hold the University Council accountable and ensure that negotiated benefits reach the intended beneficiaries without undue delay.

Leadership that Works for Dons Vote for leadership committed to academic staff rights, welfare and professional dignity.

3. Strengthening Strategic Union Solidarity and Partnerships

Effective protection of staff interests requires strong alliances within the labour movement. Our leadership will deepen collaboration and solidarity with sister unions, including KUSU and KUDHEIHA, to enhance collective bargaining power and strengthen advocacy within the university.

Through coordinated engagement, the unions will:

  • Present unified positions in negotiations with University Council.
  • Advocate collectively for proper implementation of CBAs.
  • Protect workers from unilateral administrative actions that undermine negotiated rights.
  • Strengthen national advocacy on issues affecting the entire university workforce.

A coordinated Union front will enhance bargaining power and ensure that the interests of academic and non-academic staff are advanced in a coherent and effective manner.

Our Commitment

We commit to leadership that is transparent, consultative and firmly grounded in fairness, accountability and solidarity.

Together, we will strengthen our Union, protect the dignity of academic staff and build an institution where scholarship, professionalism and staff welfare thrive.
