The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA) have officially launched a nationwide strike across all public universities in Kenya.

The joint launch took place today at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), bringing together union members from all three organizations in a show of unified solidarity.

🤝 Leadership at the Helm

The launch was led by key union officials, including:

  • Prof. Ochieng Odalo – UASU TUM Secretary General

  • Darius Oloo – UASU TUM Chairperson

  • Mr. Kasim Ziro – KUSU Chairperson

  • Justus Ichungwa – KUSU Official

  • KUDHEIHA Officials

📋 Key Issues Raised

The striking unions have outlined three primary issues driving the industrial action:

1. 💰 Payment of Salaries from the Exchequer
The unions are demanding that the salaries of all university employees be paid directly from the National Exchequer. The issue concerns the funding and payment arrangements for staff in public universities, ensuring their remuneration is not tied to unpredictable student-driven revenue streams.

2. 📝 Negotiate, Sign, Register & Implement the 2025–2029 NCBA
The strike seeks the immediate conclusion of the 2025–2029 National Collective Bargaining Agreement (NCBA). The unions demand that the agreement be fully negotiated, signed, registered, and implemented without further delay.

3. 📜 Restore Negotiable Items in Generic Human Resources Instruments
The strike communications identify the removal of negotiable items from the Generic Human Resources Instruments as another major concern. The unions are demanding the restoration of these items to protect the terms and conditions of service for university staff.

📢 A Unified Front

The joint launch at TUM signals a coordinated effort by all university unions to press the government for immediate action. The strike is expected to continue until the demands are met.

Solidarity Forever.
