📢 UASU: Government Tables Reduced KSh 11 Billion Counter-Offer as CBA Talks Collapse
📅 26 October 2026
📍 Nairobi, Kenya
The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has announced that negotiations over the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) have ended without a resolution after the Government tabled a reduced verbal counter-offer of KSh 11 billion on Monday, 26 October 2026.
According to a press release issued by UASU, the latest offer represents a reduction from the KSh 12 billion offered by the Government on 12 October 2026.
💰 UASU Questions Adequacy of the Government's Offer
UASU states that the proposed KSh 11 billion offer translates to an estimated 3% increase in basic salaries, which the Union considers inadequate given the rising cost of living.
The press release cites Government data indicating that petrol prices have increased by 20% since the beginning of the year, while diesel prices have risen by 42%. UASU argues that the proposed salary increment does not adequately address the economic pressures facing university staff.
⚖️ Key Issues Remain Unresolved
UASU has reiterated two fundamental demands:
-
📝 A credible counter-offer: The Government must table an acceptable counter-offer and conclude negotiations for the 2025–2029 CBA.
-
💵 Guaranteed funding: The Government must provide an unequivocal commitment to fund public university staff salaries through the National Exchequer.
The Union maintains that these issues must be addressed before the ongoing industrial dispute can be resolved.
✊ Strike Continues as UASU Announces Escalation
Following the collapse of the talks, UASU has announced that the ongoing industrial action will continue and be intensified until a satisfactory resolution is secured.
The Union has called upon staff in public universities to remain united, steadfast and resolute in defending their rights and pursuing a just CBA.
🤝 Message to UASU-TUM Members
UASU-TUM calls upon all members to remain informed, united and committed as the national industrial action continues. Members are encouraged to follow official Union communication channels for updates on negotiations and strike activities.
