UASU Declares CBA Talks Collapse, Vows to Escalate Nationwide Strike

Nairobi, Kenya — October 12, 2026

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has announced a total collapse of negotiations with the government regarding the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

In a press release issued today, UASU Secretary-General Dr. Constantine Wasonga stated that a meeting between the union, KUSU, KUDHEIHA, and the Government’s Inter-Ministerial Committee ended without resolution.

❌ Why the Talks Failed
According to UASU, the government tabled a counter-proposal that was "largely the same" as the offer presented on October 1, 2026. The union described the offer as "woefully inadequate" and lacking a credible basis for resolving the dispute.

A critical blow to the negotiations was the absence of the National Treasury, which UASU noted is "indispensable" to resolving the funding questions at the heart of the dispute. The Treasury reportedly tendered apologies for non-attendance.

📢 The Union's Demands
UASU has placed the blame squarely on the government for the collapse of the talks, stating that bringing back the same offer does not demonstrate a commitment to resolving the dispute. The union is demanding the following immediate actions:
1️⃣ The Government must table a credible counter-offer and conclude the 2025-2029 CBA.
2️⃣ A firm commitment to Exchequer funding for public universities' staff salaries.

⚠️ Strike Escalation
Following the collapse of today's talks, UASU has announced that the ongoing strike will be upscaled and escalated until the dispute is resolved.

"We call upon staff in public universities to remain united, steadfast and resolute," the statement read. "The struggle for a fair CBA continues. UASU will not relent until our demands are substantively addressed."

✊ Solidarity Forever.
